Engineer, photographer, designer and writer based in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

My working life began in industrial instrumentation, automation and process control, and has since wandered through machines, software, design, hotels, pathology, photography and other subjects that looked as though they ought to be understood.

“Polymath” is a dangerous word to apply to oneself. Generalist with tools is probably safer.

This website is the resulting notebook: things seen, made, measured, photographed, repaired, tested, misunderstood and eventually understood a little better.

Method

Go outside. Notice things. Photograph things. Understand things. Make things. Write them down. Publish small files.

The subjects are allowed to collide. A road can become a field note, a machine an engineering note, a spider a natural-history record, and a failed repair a perfectly respectable workshop entry.
